If you start to fall behind with your rent, the first thing to do is make sure you get advice as soon a possible.
If you are struggling to make ends meet on benefits or low income, even a small amount of rent arrears can quickly become a big problem.
Contact your landlord immediately
Social Landlords will offer advice and support through their rent teams. The rents teams can offer advice on ways to pay your rent and what to do if you fall behind with behind with payments.
The most common form of support with paying your rent is Housing Benefit. This is money from the government specifically to pay your rent. Whether you are in work, unemployed, retired or off work because of illness, it’s worth looking into. You may be able to make a claim.
Do not ignore letters regarding rent arrears – contact your landlord immediately failure to do so could result in loosing your home.
